Enagron Ecotourism Village

We were born and raised in the beautiful villages of the Greek Countryside, as most of the Greek people belonging to the previous generation. Overwhelmed by our need to study and work, we left for the cities; the cities that were built in the turbulence of human loneliness and mechanical sounds. We deprived ourselves, as well as our senses, from the sounds, the images, the colors, the flavors and the scents of nature.

At some point, as we return as guests to the few things that have remained pure and unaffected from human exploitation, we realize that the essence of life is still there. Once again, we discover the seasons as nature has defined and measured them. We are fortunate since we can experience the light of the day and the silence of the night again. We discover all the elements that compose nature, as well as their purpose; the rain falls to nourish us, rather than drown us, the wind to caress us, rather than drift us away, filling us with nature's most extraordinary scents and aromas.

Out of our own personal need, we decided to create an ecotourism village in the countryside. We transformed our ideas into actions. At the centre of the most southern and big island of Greece, Crete, on the foothills of its mythical and highest mountain named Ida (or Mt. Psiloritis), at an altitude of 450m, inside the Natural Geopark of Psiloritis Mountain (member of the Global Geopark Network established by UNESCO), in Axos, a village whose history goes back in Minoan times, at least 3500 years ago when it was a city-state, we built Enagron Cretan Ecotourism Village. Enagron covers an area of 50,000m² of wild vegetation, livestock farm, cultivations and one-storey or double-storey buildings (maisonettes) which form neighborhoods and resemble a traditional village. Inspired by traditional techniques in a land of vineyards, olive groves, vegetables and botanical gardens we, the people of Enagron, have created 32 apartments consisting one, two or three rooms and equipped with all the necessary means that would enable the stay of 2 to 6 guests each one.

All organic garbage provides the food for our livestock farm, which in turn, produces the organic fertilizer we use to our cultivations. Our livestock farm and cultivations provide the ingredients that the traditional recipes, executed with mastery by our cook, put together to create the best dishes of Cretan gastronomy, the most authentic version of what is known as Mediterranean diet. Furthermore the sunlight provides the energy to our solar power system to offer us hot water throughout the 300 days of Cretan sunlight.

However Enagron Cretan Ecotourism village is not only about accommodation and gastronomy. Our aim is to combine them with a total experience that is shaped through a series of recreational and learning activities concerning the natural and cultural heritage of Crete. Thus, we, the family of Enagron have organized a series of activities that are taking place every week during its daily operation. These activities include hiking tours; cooking lessons, rides with the donkeys, cheese and bread making, botanical walks, meeting with our shepherd and farmers in their fields, visiting historical monasteries, archeological places etc.

We see for ourselves that nature's creatures, including humans, animals, birds and insects, all share the same land in a unique manner. Everything that we have succeeded until this point did not emerge out of the need to just set up an enterprise, but out of the need to experience the notion of sharing. Therefore the willing to share and communicate the knowledge of nature, culture and tradition led us to create a unique map of the local area giving information to all our fellow guest travelers that would like to explore the soul of Cretan nature and culture. We also provide the appropriate outfit like bicycles, binoculars, guides and even donkeys to achieve that. Inspired by the creativity found in the natural environment, we succeeded in making our dream come true.
